Phidar

I check back once in a while. and today i guess the MUD closed down for good.

Phidar was the first online telnet game we have played back in 95 when internet was still available only as dial up. We made a lot of friends here and its where we learned about of the online gaming culture as we see it today.

I tried logging in to no avail as the very first online game i have ever played has finally gone down.

- I just got back to reading my old posts and i was surprised a lot of you guys have seen it and posted.

I've tried a few times to connect and it looks like it is no more. There is no Wikipedia page for it anymore either, so I'm assuming that this is for good.

I started playing Phidar back in January 1996. I'm really quite sad to see it down. It was the only MUD that I ever stuck with and continued playing. Had a lot of good times on there.

who were you guys on there?

I was wondering if it finally shut down for good. I played it quite a bit around '96-'98

I played Terminat, when they reset the server and I had to start over, I never really came back because they dropped the vampire class.

I was taking a Security+ exam and it reminded me of Phidar with the mention of a telnet question. I have checked in over the ages since the great pwipe fiasco just to say hi. Unfortunately, I guess many of us grew up or moved on to bigger (but not better content wise, Phidar was great) games. It would be nice if there was a way to get ahold of everyone though. I have some good memories of that game. I can't even play World of Warcraft for 16 hours straight.

Anyone still keep in contact with the folks that used to play?

RIP Phidar.

Shouts to all central IL Chaos: Thor, Soran, Kaz, Tritab, and Keene. I found some nine year old photographs of the first Bloomington Chaos party the other day.

I wonder what Zan and Fish are up to?

On the 54 max level setup, I was (the original) Ktulu (human mage). At the end, I was Cynder (some giant warrior, can't remember).

I played Lazarus, just happened to google Phidar to check up and noticed this page. Glad to see you all doing good.

I played for a while under the names Nixter/Exeden.. Where's the guy that used to run Phidar.. I wonder if he still has the source, it'd be cool to run a un-official server for nostalgic reasons.

Chant/Morg said...

You mean Lucifuge. He was the main imp/coder. I spoke to him last a year or so ago. He was playing Warcraft semi-not-so-seriously.

Btw I was Chant/Morg. I have fond memories of the game both playing and leading a couple clans - Omerta/Chaos as well as doing zones (Varf Mandra).

I'm on WoW Korgath server as a hunter (Durst) and my email is terencej@sbcglobal.net if anyone is interested.

played it lots when i was in college.. 94-95? 96?
Can't for the life of me remember what my nick was, but I ended up at a pretty high level at the end.

anyone remember playing with a norwegian boy?

I was seriously addicted for a while, and I remember for real thinking "open door" or something once when i went into the library :)

Wanted to add that me(Bulwark), Trey(Turnbull), Stephan(Itoli), Joe(Kaherdin) and Ben(Jingading) can all be found on Proudmoore server WoW.

Although Trey, Stephan and I will be transfering to Tich shortly.

And again, Phidar is back :)

Wow, can't believe so many ppl stumbled onto this post.

I also can't believe Vanvil didn't give me a shout-out since those were MY pictures he probably stumbled across.

I got a message from Mystique saying the mud was back up, so I'll probably hop on to say hi.

Someone told me that Phidar was alive and kicking again. It's been years since I stopped by. As soon as I can install a telnet whatsit I'll log in and see who's on.

Heya Wrath... I am really surprised I found this. It's been a long time, Hobbes here :).

Glad to hear that Phidar is back up. I may poke my head in to say hi. Been playing WoW since release on the same server, Dragonblight (US-West coast) alliance side. Any of you old Phidarians, come say hi -- my name is Kalessin. I miss you all a lot, it was fantastic back in its heydey.

OMG, in a fit of nostalgia, I started googling what happened to muds I played and found this. Yeah, I gotta say Phidar's definitely an original and 3 (or was it 4) years that I'll never get back but I also got no regrets. Met some great people but I've lost touch with most of yal. Good to see people still remember the little colored ascii characters scrolling past your screen and yelling at your 28.8K modem to quit dropping packets, I am in CPK!

--ahh... memories.

Loq/Lycilium

*PS. no, I don't play WoW, I have no desire to get addicted to another game again, but if you would like to keep in touch, I am on MSN as chih-wei.chuang ( at ) hotmail.com (I stopped logging in to all my other IM accounts pretty much..., this is just my work one)

Like everyone else, I found this by googling Phidar. It's great to see so many names that I remember. I started playing the game thanks to a friend of mine that I worked with in college, his character was named Fast. I played Roof, among other others. so much nostalgia. It still cracks me up to think about the ways people found to have fun in that game. My favorite was when people would charm the crows in Varf Mandra and bring them into CPK zones, and then just wait for the people to start gating in. Good times.

Oi, Diomedes here. I noticed it shut down. Probably a good thing since I actually got my life back on track, full time decent job girlfriend that earns more than me and now own 2 houses. She nags enough when I spend 15-20 minutes downloading let alone mudding. Well all good things have to end eventually.

I can be contacted on diomedes@tpg.com.au if any of you pride marchers wanna send regards or catch up. I promise I will respond.

Phidar is up. Has been for a while. phidar.org 9000.

Not too many ppl ever log; it's rare to see more than 2-3 people. Baltavi tends to be on a lot, and I log on from time to time just to catch up w/ people... anyway, it's definitely there.

As for the wikipedia page, Phidar does not meet the standards for having a wikipedia page because of its size - I played from 94ish on (with a few breaks), and I don't ever recall seeing over 500 (even 200) ppl on at once. Phidar was awesome, but small all things considered.

Used to play as Dres/Salpula, I remeber seeing higher numbers of people on, posssibly breaking 100 in the 98-2001 range, but if I remember it being more like to have a 20 or so.

It's 23mar10 2014EST... how did you post for tomorrow lol?

I remember trying a couple years back and had heard it shutdown. I do have some fun memories of folks on there and even met up with one IRL (think it was in '96 or '97) to hit an NCAA March Madness game.

Fun times. Hope everyone from the old days are doing well.

It seems that some things are slow to die, and I am glad that Phidar is one of them. From time to time I google it to see what I will find.

Normally its Jat's personal website. I haven't heard from many of the guys from back in the day, and it was some real life friends that got me interested in the game.

Oh well, way leads to way, but Any of the Phoenix guys and gals that are out there. Or anyone who wants to wax nostalgic. Send me an email to

Heh.. Glad people remember the site. I was one of the original Imps along with Luci and jat and the others when we first decided we were going to revolt, leave Medevia because Vryce was getting all wacky with his coding, and start up our own MUD.

I played on Phidar in those college years of the mid 90's as Dangermouse. My friend played Penfold. Phidar was a suprisingly social and engaging game.

Wow, so many familiar names! I wasted half my teen years on Phidar, and I have never been able to find as good a game since. As I am writing this, Phidar appears to be down again, or at least not reachable. Those were some great years in life... I'm glad that so many people have not forgotten.

I think it's a good indicator of a great game if so many people think to search for and find remnants of Phidar. It's good/nostalgic to see so many familiar names.

This is blowin' my mind. I played Phidar for like 5 years and I recognize most of these names. I was Althalus/Iris. Kidd/Volrax is sitting in the same room as me right now. Also, I was the one who introduced Butters to Phidar. He was a coworker at the time, so, uh, that's a thing.

I finally got around to reading most of the Wheel of Time series and now so much more makes sense :)

It speaks volumes to me that so many people have commented on this post over the years. Phidar was a great environment (mmorpg, social network, creative outlet) which lead to many meaningful relationships in the real world. Mardi Gras, parties in Champaign and Bloomington. Great stuff. Thanks for the memories!

Ah yes. Plenty of memories from Phidar. Playing to coding to building. Bunch names that still look familiar. Actually met someone from the mud IRL once.

I do fondly remember my challenge quests and the insane King of the Hill zone that I made complete with enough random room proc's to keep everyone frustrated.

Anyways...time to start up SW:ToR in the next few days and who knows....maybe we'll meet again

Hahah same nostalgic feelings about Phidar here. I stumbled upon an old Phidar log in one of my backups. Must have spend the better part of my educational life playing this ;)

Was Argaloth (Emonstar before it got renamed by some imm :)/Kalyn/Rualyth. (Still talking to Rykaj/Skea, Rodin, Erinthes, Loes and the other Dutch ppl from clan Angels/Riva IRL). I know they also still have fond memories of playing Phidar.

Had so much fun coding our clan eq database with Rodin. I still have the eq. database laying around incl. the scripts and the search website :D

Weird to see so many ppl still remembering this game :)
